Petal It Forward, Pugh’s Flowers gave away hundreds of flowers!
On October 19th Pugh's Flowers had a great time in Southaven giving away free flowers as part of the nationwide #petalitforward campaign. At lunchtime in Southaven in front of Moe's Southwest Grill, we gave each recipient two bouquets and asked them to keep one and share one with a friend, loved one or even a stranger to promote the happiness that flowers bring. Scientific research shows that the presence of flowers improves mood, creativity and productivity. Michael Pugh, Tim Pugh, Marlowe Pugh, Caroline Hudsmith, Ronda Delk and Debbie Crawford all helped greet shoppers and give away the bouquets. A great time was had by all!
40 years... that's how long Pugh's Flowers has been in business in the Memphis area. We are celebrating an anniversary this year in fact. We are believers in Memphis and support the Choose 901 movement and use locally owned businesses whenever possible. We do make ordering for delivery anywhere easy however, as we can get flowers or plants or gift baskets anywhere worldwide!
Michael Pugh inducted into the American Academy of Floriculture
Our very own Michael Pugh, owner and CFO of Pugh's Flowers and Pugh's Earthworks, just received his certificate for being inducted into the American Academy of Floriculture. The ceremony was held in Maui and hosted by the Society of American Florists on September 23rd, 2016. The stringent requirements of the Academy make AAF status a distinction recognized throughout the industry. Pugh's is very proud that Michael has achieved this honor.
Fall is Here, warm color trends, rich hues!
Autumn is here even though it's still hot outside. In the trendy market of gift giving or event planning, it's time for rich, warm colors and textured floral arrangements. Here are some of the most popular blooms in season in the fall: September: Hyacinth, alstromeria, gerbera, daffodil, iris, lillium stargazer, magnolia, rose, snap dragon, stock, sunflower, zinnia. October: Stock, alstromeria, calla, delphinium, gerbera, iris, liatris, magniolia, rose, snap dragon, sunflower. Some of these are specialty blooms and will need weeks to order, while others are kept in stock locally. Fall seems to be one of our customer's favorite times of the year to send a bouquet. The house or office will thrive with warm, seasonal color! A few new fall arrangements at Pugh's Flowers:
Fall Wedding Trends, Pugh’s Flowers Memphis
The latest fashion in fall wedding flowers is warm, richly hued arrangements with lots of texture variety. Instead of using just a few types of stems in your centerpieces, try a wide mix of flowers coordinated with your color plan. For example, you could start with a base of classic flowers and mix in feathery crocosmia and velvety coxcomb. Or you could add non-floral accents such as viburnum or hypericum berries, lotus pods, fiddlehead ferns, or wooly lamb's ear leaves to make the arrangements more remarkable. For a distinctly fall touch, poppies with dark centers add visual depth and a dramatic element that announces that summer is gone. Although texture is key, classic flowers still reign for fall weddings. Adjust them to the time of year by selecting more deep and dramatic shades than you would in the summertime -- opt for classic fall hues or go with more unexpected colors like aubergine, copper, and forest green. Lush, elegant dahlias may be the perfect fall bloom since they come in all the autumnal tones (red, burgundy, orange, and plum). Of course, roses will always be popular and are available in any hue you need for your fall color scheme. Also hot for fall weddings: antique hydrangeas in greens and purples, and deep crimson calla lilies. For centerpieces, unique containers are in style. Classic glass vases may feel right in summer, but for fall, style-conscious couples are using everything from eye-catching copper pots to silver trophy cups and gold-leaf vases, or going earthy with containers made of wood or covered in lichen or burlap. Mismatched antique urns or pots from the flea market are also popular. Use a collection of pots in different sizes -- as many as five per table -- that your guests can take home at the end of the evening. If you decide on glass vases, you can add a distinctly fall feel by using wheat berries or millet as a base for the flowers. See more fall wedding ideas on the Pugh's Flowers Pinterest Page.
Sunday is Grandparent’s Day
Congress passed the legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents' Day and, on August 3, 1978, then-President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation. Today's grandparents vary in age from 30 to 110 years old, and grandchildren range from newborns to retirees. The dramatic increases in long, healthy lives, coupled with the fact that an increasing number of teens are bearing children, have produced a society in which three quarters of us can expect to become a grandparent and to remain in that role for many years, eventually becoming great-grandparents too. Research shows the grandparent role tends to be more important for the working class, for the less educated, for those who are older, for those who are unemployed or retired, for widows, and for those who are not involved in community affairs. There are no clearly-defined societal rules or expectations for being a grandparent. Relationships between grandparents and grandchildren are in many ways optional and individually specified. This relationship for most families is second in emotional importance, with parents being the most important role of course. Flowers, plants, snack treats and fruit baskets are wonderful surprises to send to Grandparents near or far. Pugh's Flowers has a lovely selection of items to make your grandparents feel special.
